Elizabeth - VT 2010

“Declared illegitimate aged 3. Tried for treason aged 21. Crowned Queen aged 25.”

It's 1553 and King Henry VIII has died. His sickly son Edward VI reigns for a short while before dying also and his eldest daughter, Mary, a childless Catholic, has ascended to the throne. Under Mary's reign, the Protestants, known as heretics, are being tortured. Mary is ill and her half sister, the Protestant Elizabeth, is next to ascend to the throne. Regardless of Mary being queen, she would never allow a Protestant to rule England. Upon Mary's death in 1558 England is weak and in disarray. Many are out to unseat Elizabeth, 'a heretic'. To ensure her security on the throne, Elizabeth must prove her leadership, which includes, according to the advice of her many advisors, establishment of a unified Church of England, marriage to a suitable husband, and the production of an heir.

This spring Lunds Student Theatre will put up the play Elizabeth, a version of the movie script from 1998 (with Cate Blanchett) adapted for the stage, in English.
